Platform

Art

I support creating a Huntington Beach Performing Arts Center that would also serve as a new chamber for the Huntington Beach City Council.

Desalination

I oppose building the desalination plant based on the current contract’s length and the fact that we are not in a drought.

History

As a member of the Huntington Beach Historic Resources Board, I hope to bring a historical perspective if elected. I also hope to serve as Councilman Liaison to the Huntington Beach Historic Resources Board.

Homelessness

Homelessness is one of he most serious issues facing our city, and I support building a shelter. We also have to begin enforcing our anti camping  ordinance once the shelter is built.

Statement by Mr. Amory Hanson on coronavirus

Right now, our city, our county, and our country is in crisis mode.

The coronavirus has become an increasingly important concern.

In recent days, I had been concerned about the possibility I may have the virus. I went to see Dr. Nguyen, my primary care physician. Dr. Nguyen  determined I do not have the coronavirus.

Unfortunately, I am exhibiting symptoms that might be associated with the coronavirus, particularly a strong cough. while I normally would just go about my day to day life, accepting the presence of my cough, the coronavirus epidemic has made it needed to inform the public of my illness.

Until April 2, I intend to avoid going out in public as much as possible, limiting myself to daily trips to the grocery store. the Huntington Beach Historic Resources Board has already cancelled it's March 18 meeting, so the matter of my attendance is moot.

To those who may see me at the grocery store, please note that I do not have the coronavirus and will not infect you. I do hope that my presence will not cause concern. understand that I have to be able to eat.

one of the things I will miss greatly during my period of isolation is the many friends and colleagues I have. you are always free to call me at 714-371-5578

Mr. Amory Hanson’s Oration before the Huntington Beach City Council on the subleasing of the International Surfing Museum

Thank You Mister Mayor:

My Name is Amory Hanson, and I am a candidate for Huntington Beach City Council in 2020 and a member of the Huntington Beach Historic Resources Board.

I  rise today in opposition to Item XXIVB, The proposal by Miss Fritzal to sublease the International Surfing Museum to the Surfing Heritage and Cultural Center’s Board of Directors.

I recognize the value of promoting Huntington Beach’s surfing history, especially in light of the  International Olympic Committee’s recent decision to make surfing an Olympic Sport for the Summer Olympics in Tokyo in 2020.

While I greatly respect the efforts by Messrs. Michael and Eshelman and the  Surfing Heritage and Cultural Center’s Board of Trustees to preserve San Clemente’s Surfing history, I believe that Huntington Beach must maintain and retain local control over Huntington Beach’s own surfing history.  There are differences between the histories and beaches of Huntington Beach and San Clemente that must be appreciated.

Huntington Beach is The 4th most populous  city in Orange County, and it must increase it’s cultural output.

Years ago, before the Huntington Beach Marketing and Visitors Bureau created the somewhat plain nickname “surf City,” there was a time when Huntington Beach was the city of expanding horizons.

Huntingtonians seeked knowledge. They created chariots. They  explored the moon and the sea. They shared that knowledge with ourselves, with the world and with the next generation.

Mr. Slater, a legendary surfer, once said “There's always some wave  [a surfer] wants to surf.” so it must be for the viewer of theatres , for the  spectator of arenae and yes, for the visitor of musea.

I urge the Huntington Beach City Council to vote no on Item XXIVB or at minimum, to refer  Miss Fritzal’s proposal to the Huntington Beach Historic Resources Board.
